Boy George Could Lose Trademark ... TO HIS NAME!
UK media is reporting that Boy George could lose the trademark to his name, as his band Culture Club is drowning in over £12million in debt.
He founded the popular 80s band back in 1981, with Roy Hay, Mikey Craig, and Jon Moss. Although his real name is George Alan O'Dowd, he decided to perform under the name Boy George. registering the name as a trademark the same year.
But the trademark lapsed in 2024, now putting him at risk of losing the rights to his stage name.
The "Culture Club" trademark also expired last year. The company in charge of the trademarks, Mispocha Touring – run by George and his bandmates Craig and Hay – collapsed in 2023.
Failure to repay the MEP Capital debt could see the band’s back catalogue, name, and Boy George’s name taken from them. However, a payment plan will allow the musicians to pay back £500,000 every six months until December 2027.
Apparently being a judge on The Voice, decades of royalties, and a solo career do not pay what they used to.
