"The Wedding Banquet" is an Unconventional Gay RomCom
Are you ready for another Wedding Banquet?
The original movie came out in 1993 and was directed, produced and co-written by Ang Lee. In that story, a bisexual Taiwanese immigrant man marries a mainland Chinese woman to appease his overbearing parents and help get her a green card. And he has to hide his relationship with another man at the same time.
Fast forward to 2025, and Andrew Ahn has created an updated version, working with James Schamus, who co-wrote the original. In this version, it’s a boyfriend’s reluctance to commit to marriage that sets off the whacky fake marriage scheme. Mayhem ensues!
