Rewind: MACKLEMORE's "SAME LOVE"

"Same Love" was the third song released by American hip hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.

The track, featuring vocals by Seattle-based singer Mary Lambert, talks about the issue of gay and lesbian rights and was recorded during the campaign for Washington Referendum 74, which, upon approval in November 2012, legalized same-sex marriage in Washington State.

The song charted at 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, made it to number 1 in Australia and New Zealand, and was a top 10 hit in Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom.

During the 56th Grammy Awards, Macklemore, Lewis, and Lambert performed the single. They were joined onstage by Queen Latifah who oversaw and officiated the weddings of 33 same-sex and opposite-sex couples.

The song was inspired by Macklemore's gay uncle, a teenager who died by suicide after being bullied.  Macklemore said he was tired of hip hop's negative views on homosexuality.
